Maximize fire safety at extraction plants with the 2009 NFPA 36!
Trust NFPA 36: Standard for Solvent Extraction Plants, to mitigate the specialized hazards involved in extraction of oils from agricultural commodities, such as oil-bearing seeds, using hydrocarbon solvents.
Make sure you're working with the latest rules involving:
- Operations involved in preparing raw material (meal) for processing
- Storage and handling of the solvent
- Fire-safe design of the extraction facility and the process equipment
- Means for conveying the oil and processed solids from the extraction facility
- Conducting repairs when extraction equipment is operating and when it is shut down and purged of hydrocarbon vapors
Changes incorporated into the 2009 edition of NFPA 36 include:
- A provision to allow electric space heaters that are approved for Class I, Division 1, Group D and Class II, Division 1, Group G locations to be used in meal preparation areas and in extraction process areas
- Major revision to the drainage and spill control requirements in Chapter 7, particularly details of the oil/water separation sump
- Revisions to process control systems
- Adoption of several new and revised definitions
